Glamour portraits focuses on the beauty of the person in the photograph. While it’s a standalone genre, that focus on beauty, it can inspire work in other genres as well. Glamour portraits aren’t well understood. It is a genre that celebrates sexual attraction. But it doesn’t necessarily include sexual content. This isn’t boudoir. There’s no nudity involved. In fact, in many cases women are fully covered. It’s based on the same logic that a woman can find a man sexually attractive in a well tailored suit. The idea of highlighting a woman’s sex appeal and natural beauty without showing excessive skin can make many photographers apprehensive. It’s why glamour portrait photographers aren’t too common these days.
Glamour shots focus on physical beauty. Photographers piece together several different aspects. This is to highlight that ethereal fairy tale beauty. From the wardrobe and makeup to lighting and post-processing. All the different elements work together to celebrate the subject’s beauty. For many, glamour photography is about giving women confidence. And about making all women feel beautiful. Girls and women of any age can enjoy this service safely.
What is Involved
For photographers, glamour portraits is a session that maximizes the subject’s beauty. It’s a portrait session that can involve makeup, hair, fashionable dresses, fine-tuned poses, and beautiful locations. The more you put into it, the more you get out. While I do offer the photography service, I am happy to recommend other vendors to aid you in you dream look.
Discovering your Look
In glamour portraits, I am happy to work with whatever wardrobe you decide to use. Choosing clothing that highlight your curves, rather than hiding them is important. The wardrobe should flatter without being too loose or too snug. That’s not a hard and fast rule though. For example, a loose “boyfriend” shirt hides enough to tease but still covers all the essentials. The focus is on the person and not the clothing. The wardrobe also shouldn’t be too distracting. Solid colors are preferrerable. Any patterns need to be minimal.
High heels are also often a favorite for glamour photographers. This is because of the way the arched foot helps highlight curves in the calves and thighs. Whether you are going for 50s glamour with bold red lipstick or a natural look. Well-done makeup and nails can play a big role in the final results. Due to the cultural diversity of my clients, many women even turn to traditional glamour from their own heritage. The choice is really yours.
Jessica’s glamour portrait session was done at Kariya Park. She’s well know for doing a lot of cosplay work. But want to do a more elegant attempt at something that reflected the beauty of her Japanese heritage.
