I’m excited to finally share Debbie and David’s fusion wedding at Granite Brewery. The moment I met these two, I knew their wedding would be special. In fact, it blew me away. Brewery weddings are honestly so much fun to work with. It all started with morning bride prep. I’ve never seen such a unique wedding dress before. Most plus size brides will try to conform to traditional wedding gowns. Debbie wanted to look like a bride on her wedding day, but she just wanted to be comfortable. She bought a beautiful infinity dress not only for herself, but for her bridesmaids as well. These dresses are comfortable and completely customizable for any body type.
Meanwhile, the workers at Granite Brewery were busying away on wedding details. This wedding is a Chinese/Western fusion wedding with a lego theme thrown in just for fun. This is my first lego theme wedding. It gives off a more fun atmosphere. They had Lego Minifigures and caramel popcorn as party favours. Their receiving table was decorated by a lego bride/groom statue. Even the exit music for their wedding ceremony was Everything is Awesome from the Lego Movie.
The original civil ceremony was intended to be in the back gardens of Granite Brewery. However rain forced everyone to squeeze onto the sheltered patio of this venue. Luckily the rain cleared away for the tea ceremony. So we were able to relocate to the gardens for this event.
Chinese Tea Ceremonies
The tea ceremony begins for the groom’s family, followed by the bride’s family. It is a ceremony to honour your elders. As always, these traditions differ from family to family. And even more so when it comes to a fusion wedding like this. As a rule, the tea serves in order of hierarchy. So starting with grandparents. Then parents, aunties/uncles, elder siblings, and finally cousins. The tea set is often a gift. If the bride has a dowry, they will include a tea set for the ceremony. The tea is usually infused with lotus seeds or even red dates to symbolize fertility. The bridal party will usually help with pouring the tea and cleaning cups during the ceremony.
Traditionally, the couple serves tea whilst kneeling down, but some modern families prefer to bow instead. Either way shows respect to your elders. Following the tea ceremony, gifts are given to the bride and groom. They can usually be red envelopes containing money. They can also consist of jewelry handed down from female relatives to the bride. In this case, the tea ceremony was private and only included the key family members.
The family also included a Tie Cutting Ceremony for the groom during their evening reception. At Italian weddings, there is a tradition where the friends of the groom cut a piece of his tie, and hold an auction to raise money for the couple. There is also a belief that if the piece of the husband’s tie raises a lot of money, then the couple will live a prosperous life.
